Catan the Board Game Will Have You Hating Your Friends

Courtesy: Flickr

Released in 1996, 23 years ago this game will still have you hating your friends.

Okay, not actually hating but the competitiveness and need to prove your power is present, as always. Catan the board game. You can play with up to 10 of your friends.

The goal of the game is to lay out settlements on the board near as many of different resources as possible. When the die are rolled the resource with that number can be taken, but only if you have a settlement on it. You must get to 10 points worth of settlements to win the game. There’s extra cards in the game called development cards which reveal different tricks that can put you ahead of the pack.

Warning! This game can take over an hour to play, but is completely worth it. As you watch other players build and collect resources you get more competitive. The game always stays pretty close in score, so you always feel like you could have a chance to win.

There's actually a whole Twitter page dedicated to funny quotes about the game.

“The game lasts a few hours, but the grudges last forever,” said @catanquotes on Twitter.

This I can relate to.

When you play the game you feel the need to not only focus on your settlements, but who knows, maybe throw some shade at a friend and block them from getting certain resources. This keeps the game entertaining, considering the longevity of it.

“It’s super fun, but I always end up getting super mad at my friends. It’s a good mad, though,” said Kane Weekly.

“When I started developing “The Settlers of Catan” in the early nineties, I was inspired by the Vikings,” said Klaus Teuber a developer of the board game.

The game has a octogonal shape to it, like an island shaped with water around it. This brings out the feel of being on an island and needing to claim your land and expand your territory.

For me this makes the game more interesting, as if it’s revealing a story where you can create the narrative.

My rating: 4 stars

Can be bought at: Local Walmarts and Target

My Neighborhood/Hometown  I'm going to photograph Albany, Oregon. I actually currently live in Lebanon, but I grew up in Albany and for almost my whole life it's where I lived and went to school. It's still what I consider my home.  A portrait I could shoot would be a worker in Albany. I would most likely do someone who works at a popular "just Albany" place, like Hasty Freeze. A landmark I could photograph would be something like the clocktower, or the train station area. An activity I could photograph could be the farmers market on Saturday, or a sporting event happening in town.  The biggest photo challenge in this assignment will probably be the activity. I work a lot and don't always have time to make it to different things happening around Albany, and there's also the factor that I live on Lebanon.  Two Photo Story Ideas One interesting photo story I could do would be my sisters pregnant horse. Taking photos of how horses grow and go throu...

Colitis survivor Brody Johannesen

As he sat in his hospital bed, Brody Johannessen wondered, why me? What is wrong with me, what did I do to deserve this? Weeks later looking in the mirror he saw someone he didn’t recognize. Someone who didn’t know where to look next or how his life would change. 80, 90, 100 pounds up on the bar. Now the only goal is to push the next rep. LBCC sports science major Brody Johannessen was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis the summer before his senior year of high school. Not knowing if he would ever play the sport he loved again and how his life would change because of it. “It was soul crushing, because I found out right before I had Linfield camp and wasn’t sure I was going to be able to play football that year,” said Johannessen. Now, he smiles as he enters the gym, carrying a notebook with the day’s workout plan. The gym is where his time now belongs. When not hanging out with friends having a game night, brody goes to school full-time and works out regularly. “Lifting was a big part ...

About me  This previous year at my high school I joined my schools magazine/journalism class. After joining I realized I really love journalism, so I'm majoring in it. I took this class as a prerequisite for my major. During my time on my school magazine I didn't do much with the photography aspect of things. In taking this class I want to widen my skills and gain some knowledge surrounding this area. Goals My goals for this class are how to work a camera. Considering I have no skills in camera use, any skills at all would be more than what I know now. I want to also engage with the campus and learn more about what is happening at LBCC. Going around and taking picture will hopefully help me do that. I would also like to get connected with the commuter and get some of my work published in it. LBCC photos I think good subjects for an upcoming photoshoot would be classes getting started and some students trying new things. Like, students first time in a lab, or first ti...
