Photographer of the Week

Annie Leibovitz Famous photographer Annie Leibovitz was well known for her redesign of the rock magazine Rolling Stone and work at the Vanity fair alongside galleries she produced in her later years. At the start of her life she didn't have the intentions of being a photographer she went to San Francisco Art University to study, and found a love for photography. During her time, beginning in 1970, Leibovitz started as a photographer at Rolling Stone she worked her way onto becoming the editor and chief and created a new and distinctive look for the magazine. This included bold looks and photographs of famous rock artists in new poses not done before. She left Rolling Stone in 1983 venturing onto work with Vanity Fair. Here she was able to take photos for a different range of people. Instead of just the rock and roll artists she was working with at Rolling Stone, she was able to photograph political events, movie actors, and exciting wordily news. Her passion for photography co

This photo stood out to me because out off 300 plus photos this was the only one that really turned out. It was exciting getting the photo and being able to go back and look at it and really be proud of a photo I took. It reflects what I learned In photo journalism by getting the action and seeing their faces. I was patient with the photos and sat in an area for a log period of time trying to get a good action photo. From the beginning of the term until now I've learned so much. Before starting this class I didn't even know how to use a camera, and now I know what a lot of the parts that go into the camera settings and how to take a good photo.  My Goals My goals for this class are how to work a camera. Considering I have no skills in camera use, any skills at all would be more than what I know now. I want to also engage with the campus and learn more about what is happening at LBCC. Going around and taking picture will hopefully help me do that. I would also like to

Photo Story

Equestrian Instructor Cindy Gooch teaches team member Aiden Demorest how to pollo wrap for his horses during the Monday 26 practice. The Linn Benton team has changed the goal for the year, turning away from competing in as many competitions to focusing on riders creating a bond with their horse and learning new skills.  In order for equestrian members to learn how to get their horses ready to ride Cindy Gooch, wraps the legs of the horses while students watch and prepare give it a try on their own. During this time Gooch spoke about the importance of having the horse properly equipped for when the team does compete starting in the spring.  Quotes, like the one shown above, are posted on a white board near the horse stalls giving encouragement to the rides and reminding them of the aspects to practice while ridding. With many of the team members being first year riders, the coaches are trying to focus on creating good habits and teaching strong tradition.  Nat

My Neighborhood/Hometown  I'm going to photograph Albany, Oregon. I actually currently live in Lebanon, but I grew up in Albany and for almost my whole life it's where I lived and went to school. It's still what I consider my home.  A portrait I could shoot would be a worker in Albany. I would most likely do someone who works at a popular "just Albany" place, like Hasty Freeze. A landmark I could photograph would be something like the clocktower, or the train station area. An activity I could photograph could be the farmers market on Saturday, or a sporting event happening in town.  The biggest photo challenge in this assignment will probably be the activity. I work a lot and don't always have time to make it to different things happening around Albany, and there's also the factor that I live on Lebanon.  Two Photo Story Ideas One interesting photo story I could do would be my sisters pregnant horse. Taking photos of how horses grow and go throu

Shooting Sports One tip that stood out from Karls talk was how to shoot the subjects. He emphasized that as a photographer you want always try and get them at a low angle to make the subject appear larger and more intense. Karl also talked about getting the eyes of your subject and being able to see their face. For my sports assignment I can use this by remembering to get at a low angle by kneeling or sitting down while shooting. Another tip Karl talked about was getting the action and reaction. As a photographer you may shoot an amazing play that just happened, but he said instead of looking down at you camera to see if you got it, or what it looks like keep shooting to also get photos of the reactions, because those photos might be just as good. For my sports assignment I can use this by shooting a lot of photos and focusing on all parts of what is happening in the game. Action/Sports Photos  I'm not super decided on my sports subject yet. I'm thinking about shooting

Lindsey Addario In chapters 2-7 of Linsey Addario's book "It's What I Do," she goes over many of the different adventures she endures during her time as a photo journalist. To me it was all simply amazing. To thinks she lived in all these countries and worked as a single women makes me view my life in a whole different perspective. Her ability to keep working through so many mishaps is inspiring. Being able to photograph through bombs and war, walking around seeing dead body parts in bags and keep her love for the work in astonishing. Two things that left an impression on me were how she handled working away form her boyfriend knowing her had other lovers. How she was able to keep her personal relationships out of her work and do her job. this made me think of how strong she has to be as a person to keep her cool like that. Another thing that left an impression on me was her time with the New York Times and being captured and held by those people. The idea of that

NPPA Code of Ethics 1) In the code of ethics item #3 was the most compelling to me: "Be complete and provide context when photographing or recording subjects. Avoid stereotyping individuals and groups. Recognize and work to avoid presenting one's own biases in the work." This stands out to me, because I'm a firm believer in letting things be. Not altering or changing to add your own opinion when it's not needed. This relates strongly with photographs; the goal is to capture a setting, not change one. 2) Under ideally journalists should #5 stands out to me, it presents, "strive to be unobtrusive and humble in dealing with subjects." This is important, because as a photographer you don't want to disrespect or or disrupted the lives of the person you're capturing. In such cases, you won't get the photograph you're needing and won't get good paying jobs. 3) I would apply this rule by not adapting or changing my photos to portray anythi

Two Portrait Subjects 1) Erick Ihde Ihde is a high school history teacher and girls soccer coach for West Albany High school. On the side he does trivia night on Wednesdays at Southpaws pizza.   The best Place to capture him would be during trivia while announcing and working the game. Props that would work best would be the microphone, the screen with questions, or him working with the score cards. I can contact this person through phone or email. 2) Thomas Tangney Physical trainer at SamFit in Lebanon Oregon.  The best place to capture him would be in the gym, or office at the SamFit gym. Props that would work best would be the equipment inside the gym or doing paper/computer work in the gym. I can contact Tangney through the Samfit office, or by going in during his work hours.   Self Critique   1) I think the best photo I've taken in this class so far is a portrait of Griffin Whitney. This photo has good lighting and I believe was composed well. The colo

Photographer of the Week  For my photographer I choose Annie Leibovitz. She's an American portrait photographer. She became the first woman to have an exhibition at the Washington's National Portrait Gallery. For 10 years she was the chief photographer for the Rolling Stone. Her photography stands out in the way she shows the emotion of her subjects. Mostly portraits she's is able to capture the mood of every photo she takes. Leibovitz was offered a job at Rolling stone in 1970, where she created a new look for the magazine. In This she began her journey to fame. Lynsey Addario "It's What I Do," by Lindsey Addario has been a pleasure to read so far. Addario is am compelling author with an amazing story of her claim to fame. She starts the book setting an intense seen that hooked me in. In chapter one she writes abut her childhood, which really surprised me. Her overcoming the change of her dad moving out with another man and starting a new life impre

About me  This previous year at my high school I joined my schools magazine/journalism class. After joining I realized I really love journalism, so I'm majoring in it. I took this class as a prerequisite for my major. During my time on my school magazine I didn't do much with the photography aspect of things. In taking this class I want to widen my skills and gain some knowledge surrounding this area. Goals My goals for this class are how to work a camera. Considering I have no skills in camera use, any skills at all would be more than what I know now. I want to also engage with the campus and learn more about what is happening at LBCC. Going around and taking picture will hopefully help me do that. I would also like to get connected with the commuter and get some of my work published in it. LBCC photos I think good subjects for an upcoming photoshoot would be classes getting started and some students trying new things. Like, students first time in a lab, or first ti

Trenton Dutcher "I am a first year student and I graduated from West Albany high school. Lb so far has been a lot better than I expected it to be. I just expected community college to be down, from what I heard. I'm majoring in business because I don't know what I want to do with my life and business opens a lot of doors. I plan on going here one year then transferring to Oregon State." Samantha Flores "In previous time, I've taken classes through my high school and gotten credits. I'm excited to start college and I'm looking forward to getting to know people in my community and people who are interested in the same thing I am, school wise. I am taking prerequisites in hopes to go to Oregon Techs sonography programs, so I hope I meet people here doing the same thing. In college so far it's been different because I have to be a grownup and deal with more complicated things."
